The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Netflix is Sweetly Haunted
I finished The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix, and I loved it to bits. I hadn’t many expectations for it despite the fantastic looks that the trailer provided. And yet, here I am enjoying it as much as I did the original show and Archie Comics [The Book Depository]. Although Salem seems quite shy in this version, I must say that all the drama and mysteries got me hooked until the great cliffhanger at the end of the show. I seriously can’t wait for the next season to be on Netflix. Sabrina needs to decide if she wants to become a witch on her sixteenth birthday. However, everybody expects her to do so. Her dad was a great Warlock, and her mother a mortal, and in theory, she can choose. But her family’s expectations and those of her coven are such that she really has no choice!

Sabrina’s parents died in an accident. Or so we’re told, but as the show progresses, we start to have substantial doubts about it. Her aunts take care of her, but they both want her to become a witch (both have different degrees of expectation). However, a demon possesses one of Sabrina’s teachers to make sure that she’ll sign the book of Satan and become a witch since there are a prophecy and destiny dictated already for her. Alas, Sabrina has a human boyfriend and cool human friends who make her think twice about wanting to sign the book. She wants to maintain her humanity and study witchcraft to battle the devil. Well, especially when she finds out that she might not have any choice about the whole thing. She has to sign it, period.
When she’s about to sign in a ceremony, she decides that she won’t, and flees the center of the forest where all the coven gathered. Then, Father Faustus Blackwood, the High Priest of the Church of Night, decides to prosecute the Spellman family. First, he takes all magic privileges to her aunts, and then he brings Sabrina to trial for breach of contract.
Luckily, Sabrina gets a human lawyer and manages to get away. She’ll need to attend the Academy of the Unseen Arts after her school for a short period of time. However, things aren’t easy, and she has to deal with massive bullying that can be lethal. She also makes a warlock friend who flirts with her. While at school she has to manage all the problems her friends and boyfriend have, she ends up trusting Mary Wardwell (Madam Satan) who is trying everything to make Sabrina sign the book of the Devil.
Goes go so bad that the brother of her boyfriend dies because of the wicked rumblings of two witches from the Academy who love bullying Sabrina. Apparently, Sabrina tries to bring him back, but that’s necromancy. Things went very wrong and defeated Sabrina ends up telling her boyfriend and friends that she’s a witch.
Madam Satan ends up thinking the ultimate plan to make Sabrina sign the book. She does so by bringing damnation to the whole town, bringing back hanged witches and the Knight of Death. Witches end up in the Academy for shelter and protection. Most of the city think a tornado is coming and end up in the High School, also for protection. But nothing can be done, and so, Sabrina ends up signing the book becoming a witch. So now, it seems that Satan can complete his master plan. We get some bits and pieces from Madam Satan, who happens to be Lilith. She is aiding Satan because she wants to reign by his side, but if he tries to cross her, she’ll have to deal with Sabrina.
Will Sabrina keep her human friends? Will she have a new boyfriend, the Warlock who craves for her? Hell is paved with good intentions, and this is precisely what we see in Sabrina’s journey in the first season. Will she become genuinely evil in the next?
The good thing about Netflix’ version of Sabrina is that we can enjoy it deeply and also enjoy the old show where Salem talked and messed around. Perhaps our favorite black cat will end up talking in the next season, but for the time being, I’ll revisit the old show. And I’ll probably read the comics too. So, if you haven’t had the pleasure of watching Sabrina yet, what are you waiting for? There’s cake, blood, a cute black cat, a hot pansexual cousin and lots of mysteries!
And if you’re still doubting, just watch the trailer.
