Omegaverse: Kurui Naku No Wa Boku No Ban Beta (Yaoi Manga)
The Omegaverse is spooky in many ways. However, it also has compelling stories. Kurui Naku No Wa Boku No Ban Beta (it’s my turn to cry Beta) [The Book Depository] [Waterstones] is a fantastic spinoff yaoi manga. It follows up with the story in Kurui Naku no Wa Boku no Ban. (It’s my turn to cry.) In this volume, we meet again with Takaba and Karasuma. However, we’re following the steps of Utou, the beta who helped Karasuma with his heat while working. Utou liked Karasuma, but the later fell in love with Takaba, a wary alpha. After mating, Utou is left alone. They’re good friends, but Utou has no significant other. All seems to go well until Utou meets his new subordinate Sasabe.
Sasabe works in a shop entertaining clients, but he also enters the company where Utou, Takaba, and Karasuma work. When he tries to entertain Utou, Sasabe complains in discovering that he’s not an alpha, but just a boring beta. All end up in a lousy memory for Utou, until he meets his subordinate, who happens to be him. And to make matters worse, he’s an Omega.

Discovering that Utou is his new boss isn’t something happy for Sasabe either. They’re both in shock, and they both resent each other. Sasabe is proud of being a capable Omega able to do his job. He wants to use his intellect to become a big fish some day. At first sight, Sasabe looks like a success-chasing demon. However, there’s more to him than meets the eye. He apparently hates betas, and working in a place filled with betas isn’t what he rooted for. And less, having a boss who happens to be one of them!
When Utou, Sasabe, Takaba, and Karasuma go on an informal dinner to know more about each other and the company, Sasabe insults Karasuma. Karasuma had gone up in the company using sex. Being an Omega, and heartbroken as he was, this looked like the perfect solution. However, Utou helped him with his misery, and Takaba ended up mating with him. He loves him, but he won’t stand for brats like Sasabe. Naturally, he asks him to apologize. Sasabe enters into a frenzy and ends up hurrying to the loo after losing his medicine.
He has a heat attack then and there. After he goes Utou, willing to help yet another Omega. Karasuma advises Utou that this one might need even more help than he ever did. So, Sasabe is a complicated one.
Utou gives medicine to Sasabe. He has it from when he used to help Karasuma. However, the drug won’t work with Sasabe. He ends up telling Utou that he’ll deal with it himself. But, Utou decides to help him go through the heat. Sasabe doesn’t want to, but Utou continues and ends up raping him. Utou is just following what he’s used to doing with Karasuma. But they’re both different individuals. That Sasabe’s behavior is a horrible one, doesn’t mean that he might be strong at all. In fact, from his memories, we can see that he was raped by a group of men, including his best friend. They forced him to do it.
Utou has no idea about this, nor that he might be triggering Sasabe’s trauma back to life. That’s why Sasabe is still a horror when he’s around Utou. Despite this, Utou continues being nice and wanting to help Sasabe. There’s just one problem, if he continues involving himself so much with him, he’ll end up falling in love with another Omega.
The next day in the office, things are awkward for Sasabe. But soon he realizes that he’s judging people in the wrong light. Takaba is a good fellow, and he’s starting to see Utou in a different light. But it’s a small, tiny step forward. Sasabe is still closed, and he wants to use his intellect to succeed. And he wants to do it without any betas around.
In the meanwhile, we can see Takaba and Karasuma in the office. When they can find a beautiful hidden spot, they make up in the workplace. After a long time together, Takaba finally introduces Karasuma to his family.
Takaba is an alpha brought up by an Omega dad. He had too many clients, and now he needs assistance. Takaba’s brothers take care of him. When he goes and visits him, he ends up crying. And when he introduces Karasuma to him, he does it as his essential other, not as his coworker. Karasuma is shocked, and also pleased. It’s a highly emotional scene that also makes Takaba realize something later on. His essential other is Karasuma. But, Takaba’s essential others were his children. This indeed was one of the strongest and most compelling scenes in this yaoi manga.
Meanwhile, Utou and Sasabe are on a train. Suddenly, Sasabe starts to get the heat, and he begins to smell far too well. Utou goes out from the train with Sasabe and brings him to a love hotel to take care of the issue. It’s so bad that Sasabe can’t do much. We end up witnessing a disturbing scene with Sasabe not wanting to do anything and wanting at the same time. He’s horrible to Utou, and Utou follows the play so that Sasabe can release soon. But all he’s doing is a replay of Sasabe’s trauma. Still, Utou has no clue about this.
And if you think matters can’t get worse, they do. The bosses at the company want Sasabe to take Karasuma’s place. So, they invite him to a company’s dinner. Karasuma will be going too, to see how well he performs. Obviously, Karasuma isn’t happy about it because he thinks it’s about sex and not about his abilities. Utou also thinks is a mistake, but what’s done is done. So, he asks Karasuma to take care of Sasabe when they’re out with the big bosses.
The last thing Sasabe wants is to become like Karasuma. He has a trauma, and what the bosses are preparing for him isn’t what he thinks. He’s blind to what’s going to happen. He truly believes that it’s his skills what made them take this decision.
Karasuma has a good life with Takaba. Although he has to deal with his demons, he has accepted himself to the fullest. And, he’s helped Takaba to understand his dad better. He has a very passionate night with Takaba. In fact, they’re lovely lovebirds. They are the contrast to Utou and Sasabe at the moment. But, they also had a great journey in the previous volume.
When the night to see the clients and other bosses arrives, things unfold horribly. Sasabe comes with his spirits high, but soon the ghost of his rape looms on him. All the alphas are trying to get to him. They have him pinned on the floor, unable to move. It’s Karasuma’s quick action that prevents things to get worse. He saves Sasabe, puts him in a taxi, and sends him home.
After that, Sasabe doesn’t go to work anymore. Utou worries about him and finally decides to go to his home to see what’s going on. He talked with the owner of the shop where Sasabe used to work and finds out that he was raped. Obviously, Utou is horrified and now understands that his behavior wasn’t good at all. He behaved with him like he did with Karasuma, and he just made things worse with Sasabe.
When Utou arrives at Sasabe’s apartment, he ends up saving him from a thug who was asking for money. They know each other, but Sasabe is in no condition to help himself. Utou goes into his apartment and notices the small details that tell him how broken Sasabe is. When he pours tea in a cup, he never stops flowing it and spilling it everywhere. He also notices all the bruises on him. Sasabe is desperate and wants comfort from Utou. But, knowing what he does now, Utou doesn’t want to touch Sasabe again. He doesn’t want to hurt him further. He wants to help him for real. And what it looks like is that he’s fallen in love with him.
Broken, and with the trauma fresh in his head, Sasabe ends up telling to Utou that he wished he was an alpha. If he were, all their problems would be solved. Things would be easier.
Kusabi’s Omegaverse [The Book Depository] [Waterstones] stories are hard to swallow. They’re dramatic, highly emotional, but so far Takaba and Karasuma are happy. We won’t know what will happen next with Sasabe and Utou. However, I hope it’s good since both should be happy. Kurui Naku no Wa Boku no Ban Beta is a great read, but it has lots of triggers. It’s hard to swallow, and yet you want to read more and more. For all Sasabe’s hate towards betas, it might be a beta who will finally set him free. But, I don’t think it’s going to be a rosy path.
