I went to see Avengers Infinity War on Saturday, and it blew my mind. I had some theories about Loki and some other characters, and I was almost right. The thing is, I went to see the movie knowing those bad things would happen to my favorite characters. So, I chose a cozy cinema that serves beer and pizza. I also had a pack of tissues with me. They were super handy since I ended up using quite a lot of them during the movie. I laughed, and I cried. Then I got hopeful, suddenly scared. And finally, I cursed.
SPOILERS: this post contains massive spoilers from the movie, but they’re hidden. You need to click on the SPOILERS to read them. If you don’t click, you can keep up reading the other parts of the post without any fear.
Before we start, just remember that you can end up smashed with your feelings on the ground. I entered the cinema super cute and with hope, and I ended up like Loki smashed by the Hulk…
As you already know, my favorite character is Loki. I had some disturbing theories about his fate, including one that painted him like a hero. Loki will always be Loki, and his ways of doing things are devious, but that’s why I love him so much. Well, I hate to say that I was right.
Loki dies in the first ten minutes of the movie, along with Heimdall. Although he seems to betray the Asgardians, he plays his last card, and he saves his brother. Because, as I predicted, the Trickster will end up saving Thor. Thanos is torturing Thor to get the stone, and Loki ends up giving it to him to save his brother. And it happens twice, since knowing how Thanos plays, he tries one last trick and saves his brother from dying. I wasn’t prepared for his death. It left me in tears, and enraged and impotent. Just as Thor was left after losing almost all his people.
I’m happy with Loki’s arc though. He goes from the villain, to slowly but surely becoming an anti-hero. And since Loki is a God, I hope that Marvel replicates the comics and we can see him jumping around and creating some more mischief.
Thor becomes one of the most excellent characters in the MCU in this movie. His arc, as Loki’s, is well crafted and amazing. He started as a jock, then slowly learned humility, and finally let himself loose in Thor Ragnarok. He becomes better, stronger, but not wiser. He’s still naive, but this combination makes him great.
This guy loses everything. In Thor Ragnarok he loses his Dad, then he loses Asgard, and now he loses whatever is left of it, and the last member of his family. To his horror, and without being able to do anything, he sees Loki die for real. As a hero, saving his life, but this marks a difference in his character. A huge one. When the Guardians of the Galaxy find him, his adrift along hundreds of corpses. He survives because he’s a God, but he’s alone.
The Guardians welcome him. Drax says that he’s the baby of a pirate and an angel, which is hilarious. As soon as they save him, Star-Lord starts being jealous. First Drax tells everyone that he’s a real man, then Gamora says that the guy has a different type of muscles, and then the others say to Star-Lord that he’s fatter. The dynamics between the Thunderer and Star-Lord is funny because Thor doesn’t give a damn really, and Star-Lord gives all the damns.
Thor bonds with the rabbit, aka Rocket. For some reason, Rocket doesn’t contradict him at all. Instead, he and Groot join Thor to go to the Dwarves place and create a new weapon to stop Thanos. During the trip, we find the most heartbreaking scene of all, one that makes Thor bond with the rabbit. Rocket knows what it is to be alone in the Universe, and when he tries to soothe Thor, he opens up to him. He lost everything, he lost his brother, and he wants revenge. Thor is now a homeless God, trying to figure out if he’s still a God or not, and what his place in the Universe is. He seems to have found a new family, of people like him. Rocket and Groot are also alone.
When they arrive at the forge of the Dwarves, they only find one survivor. He made Thanos’ gauntlet to save his people, only to see them all murdered in front of his eyes. Unable to work, it’s Thor who makes it happen. And it is here that we can truly see that he’s a God. He harnesses the power of a star and survives! He forges the Storm Breaker, a new weapon to take down Thanos with the help of Rocket, Groot, and the Dwarf. It’s Groot who gives part of his body to create the weapon. That was so awesome!
When Thor, Rocket, and Groot appear in Wakanda, Thor has mutated. He’s all-powerful and is helping to defeat Thanos’ army. Alas, Thor isn’t exactly smart. The brains were Loki’s, not his. So, when he tries to kill Thanos, he aims for the body instead of the head. And Thanos ends up moving his fingers, and with it, half of the Universe ends up in ashes.
The Guardians of the Galaxy
The Guardians funnily welcome Thor. Although Star-Lord is jealous, Rocket and Groot seem to play along well. In particular, Rocket and Thor seem to be natural friends. The rest of the Guardians like Thor too. When Thor explains what happened with Thanos, Gamora explains to them what the Titan is capable of.
When the Guardians split, Gamora, Peter, Drax, and Mantis go to retrieve one of the stones. It’s supposed to be in the hands of the Collector. However, Thanos arrived first. What they encounter is a fiction world, where Gamora kills Thanos and cries like a baby. We must remember that Gamora’s daddy is Thanos. Throughout the movie, we get to see their relationship. Fast, and at times a little bit forced, but we get to understand that Thanos loves her in a sick way. So much so, that he takes her, and then he sacrifices her to retrieve the soul stone. It’s a highly emotional moment that punched me in the gut. Thanos is a multilayered villain, and at some point, we can understand him. But, he’s crazy, and his kind of love kills. So he kills Gamora to get to the stone.
The guardian of the soul stone happens to be Red Skull, who got teleported to that reality when he fought against Captain America, and he lost. Now, he has to guard something that he’ll never have. That was a massive shock for me, to see the Red Skull out of the blue. But things like this happen a lot in comics, so I should expect more of these in the MCU.
At the end of the movie, when Thanos wins, we get to see a weird scene. He visits Gamora in another dimension. She’s a child again, and she asks him if he did it. I guess that Gamora’s soul is trapped in the soul stone, and so I have high hopes to see her again.
Drax gives us great moments of humor which is a blessing in this movie. Despite that, I kept weeping most of the time because I went from shock to shock. Marvel won’t let you breathe with this movie.
Another hard moment in the movie was when Rocket had to say goodbye to his Groot. When Thanos wins, Groot is cast into dust. His last words are “I am Groot.” But thanks to Marvel we know that he says “Dad.” Very much like Thor, Rocket has suffered far too much. I couldn’t stop crying when I saw Groot go. Why is Marvel messing up with our feelings so much!?
Black Panther & Team Cap
We get to see a few of this characters. The movie, despite being almost 3 hours long, hasn’t time enough for all the characters. The vision ends up hiding in Wakanda along with Scarlet Witch because Team Cap goes to the rescue. They all end in Wakanda trying to save the day. If you think it’s cool to see the Wakandans with our favorite Avengers, it is! My only regret is that they don’t get enough screen time. In fact, Shuri is there for just a tiny bit. (And I love the character, so I expected to see more of her). By the way, Cap and the Winter Soldier, aka White Wolf, meet again, and it’s fantastic.
I got anxious during the fight scenes. It’s good that they went to Wakanda because they have great tech. However, the aliens are suicidal! And when Thanos arrives, no one can do anything. Scarlet Witch tries to save the Vision first, but when they have no other choice, the Vision asks her to kill him. And so she does. The problem is that Thanos has the time stone, so he restores the Vision and in doing so the stone. And he gets everything.
Cap tries to stop him, but he can’t. So do other heroes, and they can’t. When Thor arrives and wounds Thanos, it isn’t enough. He snaps his fingers, and with that half of the Universe is lost. And so the Winter Soldier turns to dust, and so does Groot, the Falcon, Scarlet Witch while mourning the Vision, and Black Panther… I wasn’t prepared for this, seriously. I was left in the cinema speechless and with my heart turned to dust.
Doctor Strange, Iron Man, & Spidey
I’m like Stark here. Seriously, I was rocking myself up and forth like him by the end of the credits. When the donuts appear, it means bad news for our heroes. Heimdall had teleported the Hulk to Earth, and he ends up at Doctor Strange’s. There they meet Iron Man who was running around with Potts. (They were jogging and being adorable.) And Banner gives them the dire news, but as he ends up speaking, the donut ships arrive. Meanwhile, Parker is on a bus with his schoolmates, and his spider-sense alerts him. So, he goes heroing towards the donuts.
After a great fight, one of Thanos’ subordinates takes Doctor Strange in the donut ship towards Titan, Thanos’ planet. Spidey ends up on the ship unable to return because of the dire height. So, Iron Man goes to the rescue and gives him a super cool suit. Instead of going home, Spidey follows Stark into the ship to rescue Doctor Strange. Spidey didn’t think, and now he’s trapped with Stark going somewhere out from Earth. They fight, and they finally save Doctor Strange. However, now they’re on a ship going to Titan and with no idea on how to return to Earth.
After arrival, and after discussing what to do, they end up meeting Star-Lord and the others. When they all realize they’re on the same team, they start thinking ways on how to win the mad titan when he arrives to collect the time stone. The problem is that Thanos is enormous and extremely powerful. When they almost get the gauntlet, it’s Star-Lord who loses it because he cannot fathom that Gamora is dead. Even with the help of Nebula, who arrives later, there’s nothing to do.
When Stark is about to die, Doctor Strange gives Thanos the stone to save him. He saw something when he was meditating, but we have no idea of what that is. As soon as Thanos gets the stone, he teleports to Earth where he gets Vision’s stone and snaps his fingers. When he does, we see Star-Lord, Mantis, Drax, Doctor Strange, and Peter disappear into dust. However, Spidey’s death is the worst. His spider-sense makes him know what’s going on, and he cries to his mentor “I don’t want to go.” Stark is broken and left alone with Nebula rocking himself unable to do anything else. We’re all Stark in the cinema when the titles appear on the screen.
The End Credits
Be strong and stay until the end credits finish. You’ll get to see two familiar faces with a message of hope. Don’t move from the chair, and wait sobbing and mopping and cursing if you want.
Nick Fury also ends up becoming dust. But, before he does it, he sends a message to Captain Marvel! We get to see where his message is going, so I’m hopeful that we’ll see more women leading the movies instead of having women being around lead male characters. Still, this isn’t enough hope for such an amount of death in this movies. The bittersweet feeling you have after crying, laughing for a while, and then crying your heart out won’t leave you for days.
This is a great movie that got me pinned to the seat, laughing and crying, hoping and dreading, giggling and weeping. I have more to share about it, but I leave it for another time because I need to process everything in my head. A lot is going on, and I’m sure I need to watch it again to see more details. I already have some theories, and I hope that Marvel won’t be as douchey as to let us cry forever. This film is a ride of emotions, just go to the cinema and suffer while you laugh and cry, and laugh again. And then get smashed on the ground.
And yes, I got several drinks after the movie. Marvel was Hulk, and I was Loki pinned on the ground so shocked I couldn’t swallow the whole thing.
