Ten Count [The Book Depository] [Waterstones] is an emotional yaoi manga that will captivate you from the first page. The artwork is fresh and detailed despite its simplicity. And the story is as heartbreaking as hopeful. Shirotani is Mysophobic. However, that didn’t stop him from working as a secretary. One day, while accompanying his boss, the President, he has an accident. He’s unable to help. This is when he meets Kurose, an easygoing guy who helped the President. What happens next is just starting. Kurose happens to be a therapist, and he understands easily what Shirotani’s affliction is.

At first, Kurose doesn’t want to have anything to do with anyone. However, at the moment he sees Shirotani and sees that he is Mysophobic, he’s willing to meet him and help. They go for a coffee, and he starts giving therapy to Shirotani. At first, Shirotani is troubled, but it seems that Kurose understands him well, so he decides to keep up with the treatment. Kurose asks him to write down a list of ten things that he finds difficult to do.

So, Shirotani writes a list of nine things that he finds difficult and disgusting and leaves the tenth open. The first thing on his list is to touch a door in a public space.

Since they’re in a coffee shop, he has to open and close the door behind him touching it with his hands. He wears gloves and cleans his hands compulsively. They’re all damaged by this behavior. Shirotani is afraid that he’ll catch germs if he does so. But, he decides to go on with the therapy and does as Kurose asks him. He opens the door, and he goes back home, and he does not clean his hands.

When they meet again, they travel by train and Shirotani ends up collapsing. Although he’s trying hard to do things on his list, the problem is that he might be pushing himself too much. After that, Kurose seems to want to kiss him, but he puts an excuse: he thought there was something in Shirotani’s eyelashes.

After the episode, Kurose asks not to see each other for a while. So, Shirotani starts to go out and do things on the list with a co-worker. And soon enough, he is getting better and better. It’s not perfect at all, but he’s going on the right path. However, one day, when Shirotani is having coffee with his co-worker, he meets Kurose. He tells him about his advances, and they shake hands. What Kurose says next, shatters Shirotani. He wishes him well and states that this will be the first and last time that they shake hands.

Shirotani goes backward. Puts on the gloves again, and starts freaking out again. So much so, that he stops going to his job. So, his co-worker ends up phoning Kurose asking for help. Something is very wrong with Shirotani, and no one knows what to do.

It turns out that Kurose has feelings for Shirotani. The reason why he was willing to say goodbye forever to Shirotani was his difficulty to stay aloof around him. He wants to touch Shirotani. He loves Shirotani. When Shirotani listens to his confession, he doesn’t know what to do. Does he feel the same? What’s going on really? Shirotani ends up following Kurose home, and then things happen.

Kurose is unable to stop himself and ends up touching Shirotani. Because it would be too much for Shirotani, Kurose doesn’t kiss him. But he does touch him sexually. Shirotani collapses but doesn’t stop Shirotani at all. In fact, it looks like he wants to get “polluted” by Kurose.

[collapse]

It’s still unclear why Shirotani has this affliction, nor why Kurose wants to help him and seduce him in the wrong way. I suppose that this will be explained in the second volume. Although there’s not much action, the level of feelings in this manga is amazingly high. Shirotani is very vulnerable and naive at times. Kurose is a complete mystery. Is he trying to help or is he trying to control Shirotani?

I didn’t expect to like Ten Count [The Book Depository] [Waterstones] so much. And yet, now I’m so invested in it I cannot stop reading! I can’t wait to discover what’s next in their lives in the next volume. Plus, the artwork is impressive. It’s fresh, detailed and yet simple. This is a masterpiece of yaoi manga.
