Yay! It’s THORsday again! It’s time to take a look at Marvel’s Runaways (Secret Wars x Battleworld). In this alternate reality, Von Doom has created a world where only the best are in the elite. And so, he has created a school where students train. Every year, there is a final exam they all must take in groups. But there’s a group of students who are in detention and who are going to get in trouble if they don’t sign up for the final exam.
Jubilee, Sanna, Pixie, Amadeus Cho, Delphyne, Skaar, Molly, Tandy, and Dagger are in detention for creating trouble. Bucky sent them there. He’s in charge of security. The school’s headmaster is Valeria (Von Doom’s daughter). As you can imagine, they end up cheating and signing up. But Doom is smart and knows they have cheated!
Once they’re in the simulation room for the exam, they end up making a terrifying discovery: students kill each other without knowing it. They all think it’s a game. However, the system plays with their head making them believe it’s a game.
Once they realize it’s not a game, they freak out. They’ve lost Pixie, and so they come up with a plan to run away. Cho, the brains of the group, makes a plan to make it out from the school. But Sanna decides to stay away. She still believes she can be a member of the elite. But there’s a terrible price to pay: your friends’ blood.
Once on the run, they start becoming friends. They all used to fight in the school, but now, circumstances have changed. And so, they start creating stronger bonds among all the members of the group.
Things start going astray, however. The fuel of the airplane is running away, and so they have to make their mind to go somewhere.
They end up going to Cho’s home, only to discover it destroyed. Bucky is there waiting for them to bring them back to the school. They capture Delphyne and Cho. But in returning, the group that could escape decides to make a rebellion in the school. They’re going to fight for their rights! Whatever the cost, they’ll make things right for everyone.
Jubilee and Sanna reconcile, and the group manages to add a new member in their files: Bucky. Not only other students decide to join, but Bucky also decides to try to make things change. And so, they become the Runaways!
I won’t spoil the whole story for you. You’ll need to read the trade to know what happens. However, I can tell you that I found the read quite enerving. These kids live in a society where it seems they can’t do much but to follow the rules. Even if this regulation is all unjust, they have to comply. And yet, they realize the value to stand for a good cause and be the good guys for a change.
Following the rules of a crooked system, doesn’t make you a Superhero. You’re the villain! And so, these kids make their point in a very unusual and delightful way. Don’t miss this comic!
