Loki Year 2016: Idun’s Apples & the Marriage of Skadi
Welcome to another chapter of the Loki Year 2016! Today we’re taking a look at the Myths of Idun’s Apples and the Marriage of Skadi from the eyes of Gods of Asgard : A Graphic Novel Interpretation of the Norse Myths. The Gods of Asgard eat Idun’s apples, the apples of eternity. If they stop to eat them, they start to age, and they become weak. One day, Odin, Loki, and Hoenir set to Midgard to travel around. They hunt an animal, and when they proceed to eat it, an eagle steals part of the meat. Loki sets in pursue, but it turns out that the eagle is Thiazi, the King of the Storm Giants, a Jotun. He cannot get rid of his grip, and so he makes a deal. Loki will kidnap Idun and the apples, and Thiazi will get Loki free. And so, Loki tricks Idun. When they go for a walk, at that moment Thiazi appears and kidnaps Idun.

After just a day without apples, the Gods are starting to age. Odin finds out it was Loki, and tells him to fix the problem. And so, Loki flies to Thiazi’s place, transforms Idun in a small fruit, and he flies away in the shape of an eagle along with Idun and the apples. However, Thiazi is just behind Loki. As soon as Loki arrives back to Asgard, the Gods kill Thiazi.
News about the death of Thiazi arrive to Skadi, his daughter, who goes to Asgard to have her revenge. In this case, on Loki. After much talk, Odin sets a contest to see who can make Skadi laugh. And well, Loki does it by wrapping his balls to the beard of a goat. (Yes, that episode). And so, the Gods trick Skadi to marry Njord after a contest. (She wanted the most beautiful of the Gods, Balder).

Oh man, Norse mythology is so strange! Not much stranger than some of the stories from the Bible though, that’s for sure. Every time I read these posts, I miss Vikings more and more!
I never thought about comparing the Bible with Norse Mythology but… hmmm I don’t know what to say… Loki dancing around attached to a beard, attached to a goat is pretty strange LOL (I miss Vikings too… I don’t like the prospect of Ragnar’s death tho~ It might come soon, since according to the sagas they captured him and fed him to the snakes. And in the trailer we see him captured 😮 I’m not ready for that!)
