I found a treasure on Comixology: a feminist lesbian Viking comic called Heathen, and it blew my mind. I usually read traditional comics, not digital ones. However, some treasures can only be accessed digitally. Surfing Comixology I found a cover that caught my eye, the first issue of Heathen. I love all things Norse, so, it was easy to start reading this comic. The art of Natasha Alterici, the author, is fresh and fabulous. The colors are also thrilling, plus the characters are both delicate and vigorous.
Aydis is a Viking girl that has been cast out from her community because she likes girls. According to tradition, her father should be the one to kill her. However, she sets her free.
Aydis wants to prove that she is as strong as any man, and so she sets herself up for an adventure. For that, she follows tradition and tales of old, and she starts a quest to free Brynhild, the leader of the Valkyries. Brynhild was banished by Odin because she broke the rules eons ago. And she frees her! But when things go well, Aydis is kidnapped by a seductive goddess who shows her what Heaven can be.
This comic is thrilling: it has Norse Gods, Valkyries, talking animals and heroes. Moreover, not only this comic has strong female roles, but it also makes you think. What happens when society rules collide with the individual? What happens when you need to be yourself regardless what others expect you to be?
Aydis is a different hero. Usually, myths start with the hero being called to do their quest by Gods, messengers of the Gods, or any other outside force that tells them that. However, Aydis decides that she wants to go on a quest of her own. Also, when she rescues the Valkyrie, she is strong, not a damsel in distress. All along the story, you’ll find strong role models that break the rules and what you expect from comics and stories.
If you love different stories and Norse mythology, you’re going to love this comic. It’s unexpected and exhilarating. Demons, Gods, fantastic creatures and incredible heroes are the perfect recipe to make you love every single one of its pages. Aydis is a strong warrior with a strong will to change things, to show up that she’s as good as any other man, to show up she’s an equal. I’m sure that you’re going to love Aydis.
This is a jewel that will blow your mind: strong female role models, sexy Vikings and a story that will make you think. Give Heathen a try! You can find it here.
