Comics THORsday: The Unbealievable Gwenpool #1 + Giveaway
Comics THORsday pretends to go nuts with the Unbelievable Gwenpool #1. This issue is running its second printing, which means that it’s having a blast! Gwenpool is fresh, hilarious and crazy. What else can we hope for a Superhero title with a “pool” in it? Everything and more! We’re in front of a Superhero without super powers, a crazy comic book fan who wants to do what her favorite Superheroes do: fight the baddies. Gwen jumped from our Universe to the Universe of comics. How did she do it it’s a mystery. However, it worked for her. She comes from Howard the Duck pages and now she has her own super flashy title. She is very confident and a geek to the bone. In fact, many of her solutions are what I would do in her place: inspiration in video games, blind faith in the indestructibility of Superheroes, and so on.
The comic is fast, colorful, funny and creative. The artwork reminds me of anime. [The cover of issue #3 is an excellent reminder of My Neighbor Totoro.] Get prepared to find many references to nowadays pop culture throughout the comic and to enjoy the best of bests: a geek girl having tons of fun in the Marvel Universe.
Gwenpool is eager to take the riskier jobs and to make lots of money while doing a service to society. However, we’ll see that things aren’t that easy in the Marvel Universe after all. For a Superhero without any skills nor powers, it’s impressive what she’s able to accomplish with her geeky and crazy ideas.
Gwenpool is broke and has a techie sidekick that she picked up from a bank robbery. She wants to kick ass and earn tons of money while having loads of fun. The problem is that no one must know that she has no skills whatsoever and no powers as a Superhero. Will she be able to do that?
I’ve read till issue #3, and I must admit that I cannot have enough of Gwenpool. She is crazy, but let’s admit it, we would do the same! How many geek girls out there wouldn’t like to be in the Marvel Universe for just a while and kick ass while having tons of fun? Our Universe, as Gwenpool states, is pretty dull. Why not taking the opportunity to enjoy life in a different way?
Gwenpool seems to target geek girls who would love to be Super. It’s difficult to be a geek girl in our Universe, and so, the allure of visiting another Universe to empower ourselves can’t be denied. In essence, Gwenpool is an explosion of color, creativity, pop culture references, and “pool-ness” without any control. How can you resist her?
What Gwenpool is offering in this first issue is a way to explore joyful play while we discover, along with her, the less-funny side of being heroic: responsibility. I won’t spoil you what’s up in this issue with her sidekick, but let’s just say that it makes her realize that she might not be the hero she thought she was, but just a henchman in an intricate Universe. Being super also means being responsible!

I did see Deadpool, it was pretty good. I’m not sure that Gwenpool will be like Deadpool, but it still seems like fairly interesting. I’d love to read it.
