Tuesday Geek Girls Guide: Salt and Burn

Tuesday geek girls guide (GGG) is here! Today we’re going to talk about the family business: salt and burn! Go to the kitchen, get the salt, prepare some knives, get the fire ready and keep calm. I am going to raise you from “fandom” perdition à la Cas, and present you with one of the most compelling fandoms ever. If you still have no clue about what I’m talking about, don’t worry, you’re going to fall for two brothers, the Winchesters, and the rest of happy characters that can be found within Supernatural. Prepare some hot tea, take a seat, and prepare yourself to be rocked with one of the best fandoms ever!

I don’t want to write a new Bible just about Supernatural, so I will try to keep this post simple. And I’ll try not to fangirl too much. Supernatural is a show that has captivated the heart of thousands across the globe. This October we start with the 11th season! Yes! That’s right: season number eleven! And this is great, because if you decide to enter into this fandom (if you haven’t done it yet), this guarantees you loads of fun, emotion and the possibility to find a new family, the SPN family. But, let’s take things one step at a time.

Supernatural fans call the fandom Supernatural Family. It’s not because they feel they’re cooler than anyone else, but because it is a family. Since family don’t end with blood, and since both fans and the cast of SPN (short for Supernatural) share deep experiences, it is a real family. [SPOILER ALERT: I use many quotes from the show while writing! Sorry, but I can’t stop myself from doing that.] Not only characters are alluring, but the actors who play them are also especial as well. All of them, without exceptions. And even if the show has a problem with fridging women, overall it is a great family, one you wish to be a member of.

But before beginning my list, I want to recommend you the place to go to fish for info about SPN: the Supernatural Wiki. Any doubts you might have will be solved in this mammoth and incredible wiki. Seriously. Stay away from the episode descriptions if you don’t want to end up reading lots of spoilers. Take a look at the gorgeous seasons, and enjoy the ride!

Let’s begin!

1. Watch the shows.

Although it might sound intimidating, there are ten seasons already made, and the 11th starting now. Believe me: you will want more and more! So, prepare a pie, coffee, and tissues. You’ll need them all. Be sure you won’t lose your shoe!

2. Get the Original Soundtracks!

The music is so good! One of the reasons that made me fall into this fandom was the music! It’s lifting, especially if you love rock music.

However, you need to know this song by heart:

4. Read the books!

Just write “Supernatural” on Amazon and you’ll find tons of them! If you’ve fallen into the SPN Family, then you will need to read some of the literature about it. Nope, the SPN wiki isn’t enough.

Note: I include in this section Felicia Day’s book “you’re never weird on the internet (almost).” It’s really fun! Just get to read it too, mkay?

5. Learn how to bake pie!

Apple pie, to be more exact. You need to learn how to bake a really good pie. You never know when Dean Winchester will knock on your door. Just in case, you need to be prepared. Remember pie or die.

6. You have the Supernatural Parody song as ringtone on your iPhone!

Nope, I am not kidding at all. Please, phone me now. Yeah! Right now. You’ll listen to this shaking demons off!

7. You’ve bought or are planning to buy a ’67 Chevy Impala.

I know, expensive, but if you can get the real deal, it’s the ultimate fan dream. Even if you are in Europe! And if you can’t have a real Impala, then you can go to Hottopic and get a small Impala figurine. Whatever the case… you’ll need one!

8. You’ll need a great rock collection! Rescue your old tapes asap!

I am lucky because I still keep a great collection of tapes. But if you don’t have one, you can still rescue some tapes with good music around. (Second-hand markets, here we go!) And yes, the quality of the sound is a little bit weird, but you can remember those times in which you needed a pencil to fix them.

9. Go to a Supernatural Convention!

I haven’t been able to go to one yet, but I plan to. (I hope I’ll make it someday) If you have the opportunity do so! You will meet nice people and have a great time. I’m sure of it!

10. Get a Supernatural Tattoo!!

You can have an antidemonic possession tattoo, an AKF tattoo, or any other that tunes with you and are Supernatural!

11. Prepare yourself for crying a lot. Seriously: a lot.

Have the tissue box next to you while you’re watching the show because you’re going to get emotional and end up crying like a baby. Don’t try to share it with others, because when you cry with gifs like the one below, non-Supernatural fans will get it. Share it with the family. Let’s cry together!

12. You use balls, assbutt, idjit, bitch, jerk… Many nice words!

Be prepare to use nice dirty words that some people will not get. For example assbutt. Watch the show, and take notes. You’ll notice quickly which words are the ones 😉

13. Mondays aren’t spooky anymore. Tuesdays are!

Prepare yourself to stop fearing Mondays. Now the evil day of the week is Tuesday! Why? Well, my darling, watch the show, watch the show. All your questions will be answered there.

14. Get the Supernatural Funko Pop collection! They’re super cute!

There are many versions of Sam, Dean, and Cas (more than the ones shown in the picture above). I have the regular Sam and Dean and a French Mistake Cas. They’re all super cute! And it’s hard to choose. So, go for them! (I’m planning to get a Funko Charlie as well).

15. Get the fashion!

You can find tons of Supernatural fashion on Hottopic (and other wonderful merch that you’re going to love). Tees are fun. So, you can start there. You can also copy Sam and Dean’s fashion. Items are pretty easy to find everywhere. So, go for it!

16. Always Keep Fighting.

Jared Padalecki has a huge heart, as well as other members of the cast. Jared has run several campaigns for mental illnesses, as well as being a sweetheart online. Please follow him and get tunned when he’ll run another of his campaigns. That over there is the last campaign’s tee that I got. Join the Moose team!

17. Familiarize yourself with ships, read/write fanfiction and chill out.

You will find everything on the SPN Wiki, but just in case, before you adventure yourself within the fantastic world of Wincest, Destiel, Wincestiel, Megstiel, Samifer and others, take a deep breath. There are tons of fanfic out there. And yes, there are some ship wars. Take a breath and chill out. Whatever you’ll end up shipping it’s cool.

[Side note: ships are relationships that fans make with canon (official) couples and fan fiction ones. Not all ships are slash or yaoi (homosexual relationships); some are het (heterosexual ones). You might like or not slash. Some fans are shippers, really dedicated to these relationships. Some really like some ships, and despise others. The best way to proceed here is with an open mind and being kind to everyone.]

18. Start following and taking part in fan pages (and groups if you want) in Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr; or join forums.

There are so many groups, pages, and forums that the best way is to Google it, or explore Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr in the search of suitable communities for you. Take your time here, because there are tons of them!

And above all: salt and burn!

I could keep on telling you to start LARPing Supernatural, or listing books that I love about it, or listing my favorite episodes… As I told you at the beginning: there’s too much to be said! So, without much noise: just watch the show, and start your journey salting and burning!!!
