Tuesday Geek Girls Guide: We’re All Wizards
It’s here! Tuesday geek girls guide (GGG)! Today we’re going do some magic and pretend that we’re all wizards! Potterites and Potterheads unite! Still have no clue about what I’m talking about? Fans of Harry Potter call themselves Potterites or Potterheads. Some are fans because of the books and the movies, other because of the movies and then the books, and some just because of the movies. (Come on! Don’t throw me pillows now!) If you haven’t still met Harry Potter, use this geek guide as a route map and prepare yourself to enter into one of the most magical fandoms ever! You know we’re all wizards at heart, don’t you?
Harry Potter was written by no other than J.K.Rowling, one of my favorite authors. (If you follow this blog, you already knew that.) She created an amazing world with wizards, great heroes, incredibly good heroines and amazing villains. Fans are used to be given the feels while re-reading the books or watching the movies. The world of Harry Potter is a rich one! You’ll find your favorite characters soon, and you’ll get mad with others too. And prepare yourself to start wanting to learn some magic, attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
This is a very active fandom to be in. It’s rich in contents, in feelings and in great people! Prepare yourself to be amazed and enchanted with Harry Potter!
Let’s discover the magic together!
1. Read the books.
Although you can start with the movies right away, I highly recommend you to read the books first. It’s much better.
- Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (26 June 1997)
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2 July 1998)
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (8 July 1999)
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (8 July 2000)
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (21 June 2003)
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (16 July 2005)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (21 July 2007)
2. Watch the films.
Needless to say that all the films are amazing! I recommend to read one of the books and then go for the movie.
- Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011)
3. Learn some spells like the Patronus Charm!
One of the super fun things to do is to learn some spells. You can find them all on Harry Potter’s Wikia. These are cool and come in handy when reading the books, on when writing fanfic. (We’ll arrive to that later.)
4. Watch the Harry Potter Musicals.
These musicals are performed by the group Team Starkid and are hilarious. You need to watch them! I am serious!
AVPM (A Very Potter Musical)
AVPS (A Very Potter Sequel)
AVPSY (A Very Potter Senior Year)
5. Write a list and remember all the names of the characters. It’s fun!
There are quite a bunch. But, if you need help, you can always visit the Harry Potter Wikia. Sometimes, names can feel like potions, though.
6. Start collecting Harry Potter Funkos. They’re so cute!!!
Funko pop figurines are to die for! And are so cute! If you buy one of these, you won’t stop and will want to have them all! Just telling how your future will look like if you buy just one Funko Pop. You’ve been warned!
7. Join the Potterfashion! Also, buy some merchandise!
Join the club and wear Potterfashion!!! There are jackets, scarfs, skirts, bags, jewelry, shoes… Name it! There are tons of fashion items and merchandise! But, basically, you will need a proper scarf of the house of your choice, a wand, a puppet friend, a broom, etc. You can find them on Hottopic, Think Geek and Etsy.
8. Familiarize yourself with ships. Read fanfic, write it and/or draw!
A friend of mine pulled me into the ship of Hermione and Snape. So, welcome to the ship world of Harry Potter. You have canon ships like Hermione and Ron, and other combos that might bring you sweet naughty nightmares. Whatever the case, jump into the train of incredible fanfic and explore what’s out there! Don’t be shy! You can find them on fanfiction.net, Harry Potter Fic, among others. Apart from shipping couples, you can also read and write fanfic or start drawing fan art.
[Side note: ships are relationships that fans make with canon (official) couples and fan fiction ones. Not all ships are slash or yaoi (homosexual relationships), some are het (heterosexual ones). You might like or not slash. Some fans are shippers, really dedicated to these relationships. Some really like some ships, and despise others. The best way to proceed here is with an open mind and being kind with everyone.]
9. Start following and taking part in fan pages (and groups if you want) in Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr; or join forums.
There are so many groups, pages and forums that the best way is to Google it, or explore Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr in the search of suitable communities for us. It is something that will depend on which show you liked the most, or which movie you liked the most, or even which characters you liked the most. There are obviously general communities, but inside them you can easily find niches.
10. Join the Cosplay club and attend Cons!
You can decide to create your own Cosplay, or buy your set. With all the great merchandise out there, you can easily put together a pretty good Cosplay. So, don’t be shy and start right away!! You can attend Cons and show up with your wonderful Cosplay. It’s going to be magical for sure!
11. Go the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando!
This might be the ultimate experience! The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a great experience to be involved in. So if you have the opportunity, just go and have the greatest time of your life!! (Haven’t gone there yet, but it’s definitely on my list.)
12. Join unending debates!
So, which movie is the best adaptation ever of the books? Are you okay with Hermione ending up with Ron, or it should have been better to have ended next to Harry? What do you think about Snape? Is it fair that he died? Is he a sweetheart or a creepy guy? Would you ship him with Hermione? Or are we all getting nuts already?
13. Get a Harry Potter tattoo.
How cool would it be to get inked with your favorite fandom symbols? Google Harry Potter tattoo and get ideas!
14. Read academic books on Harry Potter.
You will be amazed by the amount of academic studies on Harry Potter! Some are really expensive, like the Scholarly Studies in Harry Potter: Applying Academic Methods to a Popular Text. And some other books are affordable, but really spiritual, like Looking for God in Harry Potter. Choices are endless! So go into them and find out that Harry Potter has much more than meets the eye!!
And above all: have loads of magical fun!
Harry Potter is an excellent fandom to be in. You’ll make great friends, enjoy the books and the movies, and have loads amounts of fun. Plus, you can re-visit the books and discover new hidden angles endlessly. Who is up for the crazy fun?
