Tuesday Geek Girls Guide: let’s start with Loki’s Army!
Welcome to Tuesday geek girls guide (GGG)! This is a new section in dePepi that will appear on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month. In this section you’ll find a guide to several fandoms, geekery, and geek activities that you can start enjoying. If you are new to fandoms, take a look at them! You might find something you’ll like. If you are already into a fandom, you might discover something new that appeals to you.
Let’s start with Loki’s Army.
I hope your body is ready for a mischievous fandom. Loki is the God of Mischief, and Lokinions and Hiddlestoners love him. Tom Hiddleston portrayed Loki of Asgard in the Marvel movies of Thor, the Avengers, and Thor The Dark World. He will portray him in the next movie Thor Ragnarok as well.
Let’s move a little bit slower. Fans of Loki say that they are Loki’s Army. If you watch the movies, you’ll discover that Loki “has an army.” It is from there that fans call themselves Loki’s Army.
But not all fans are only fans of the character of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), some are fans of Loki because of the comics. There are different versions of Loki in Marvel comics. The most recent one resembles Tom Hiddleston. In fact, Loki Agent of Asgard’s Loki begins his adventures by taking a very hot shower.
Not all fans are just fans of Loki. Those who prefer Tom Hiddleston on top of the characters he plays are called Hiddlestoners. Though it might seem a little bit confusing at times, some Hiddlestoners are into Loki’s Army, but not all of them. In the same way, not all members of Loki’s Army (or Lokions, as some call themselves) are Hiddlestoners.
However, one thing is certain: Loki’s Army is a colorful fandom in which several types of fans get fun with Loki and Tom Hiddleston. It is also a fandom with many layers: you can expand your knowledge by learning about Norse Mythology and even learning Old Norse; you can also enter a wider fandom by reading comics, and expanding your Universe by joining the comic book tribe through Loki.
So, if you are interested in this mischievous Army, you might start with one or many of the following options:
1. Watching all the Loki movies! Let’s enter the MCU!
So far we have: THOR.
The AVENGERS.
THOR The Dark World.
Watch them in that order, so you get the story correctly. You can also try to binge watch all of them with friends. Joining a fandom doesn’t need to be a solo adventure, you can also do it with friends at home. Get the movies, ask for some pizza, prepare popcorn, find a comfy sofa, and get ready for the fun.
2. Watching other movies of Tom Hiddleston.
For example: Only Lovers Left Alive.
War Horse (this one makes you cry a lot, be advised).
Muppets the Most Wanted.
Not enough? Find more of his movies here.
3. Read the comics.
There are several versions of Loki, but you can begin with Loki Agent of Asgard. It is an ongoing series. It’s interesting, and you can enjoy a very mischievous Loki in it! Hush, hush. No spoilers now!
4. Learn the Hiddlespeech!
To become a good Lokinion or a good Hiddlestoner you’ll need to learn some focal vocabulary, that’s the specific lingo that fans use within a fandom. In this case you can find expressions that are used across social media like:
My body is ready: meaning that you are really exited about something. It can be related or not to sex, and it usually is accompanied by a cool meme (like the one on the top of this post).
The feels: (or feels, or all the feels, or right in the feels, or hitting you right in the feels) meaning that you have been deeply affected by a fictional event surrounding a character. Sometimes you can find the word spelled phonetically like “pheels.”
Lokinions use Loki quotes often, and also invent words with the name Loki and Hiddleston. For example:
Loki’d: meaning that you’ve been pranked, or that you felt in love with Loki.
Ehehehehe: meaning LMFAO, LOL, or that something is very funny.
Hiddlestoned: it is similar to Loki’d, but without the mischievousness. A Hiddlestoned fan is heavily stoned by Tom Hiddleston’s charm.
You can find more focal vocabulary related to Loki’s Army here and here.
5. Familiarize yourself with ships.
Ships are relationships that fans make with canon (official) couples and fan fiction ones. Not all ships are slash or yaoi (homosexual relationships), some are het (heterosexual ones). Names are combined with the names of both characters, when they’re fictional, and with the names of the celebrities involved, when based on the real people. For example, you might find Thorki (Thor and Loki) stories and fan art, FrostIron (Loki and Tony Stark), TaserTricks (Loki and Darcy), Hiddlesworth (Tom Hiddleston and Christ Hemsworth), Hiddlesbatch (Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch), etc.
You might like or not slash. Some fans are shippers, really dedicated to these relationships. Some really like some ships, and despise others. The best way to proceed here is with an open mind and being kind with everyone.
You can find some Avengers fan fiction here. Tumblr is also a great place to look for fan fiction and fan art. Just use the ship’s name to search for the desired one. If you are unsure about the shipping combos, you can search it first into the Shipping Wiki.
6. Start following and taking part in fan pages (and groups if you want) in Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.
Here you have some examples. Facebook: Tom Hiddleston’s official page, Loki’s Army. Twitter: Tom Hiddleston’s official account, Loki’s Army. Tumblr: Loki’s Army.
You don’t need to comment much at first. If you are shy, just like some pages and take a look. You can also ask to enter in some groups. If you are unsure, take a good look before you post anything. For the most part, fans are really cute and welcoming.
7. Wear some Loki fashion!
There are really cute tees and Loki fashion out there. Try with We Love Fine, Her Universe, and Hot Topic.
You will also need a tote bag, a necklace with the Helmet, and black, green and gold nail polish. You can find some in Society6, Cuquetafera and Etsy in general.
8. Get yourself a Loki toy!
You can try out with a cute Funko Loki, or you can decide to go for a Hot Toys Loki. Either way, all of them are awesome. You can find them in several shops, but you can try in you want in Popcultcha.
9. Join the Cosplay club, and go to some Comic Cons!
You can decide to create your own Cosplay (Loki is not an easy one, wether you choose the MCU Loki or one of the comic book versions), or buy your set. You can go with casual Loki clothes as well at the beginning. Look if there’s a comic con nearby, and try first just popping up. Look for some Cosplayers, talk to them if you feel like it. Then, decide if Cosplay is for you.
The funny thing about Loki is that you can Cosplay the character as it is, or go for a Lady Loki version, or simply create your own version. In the comics, Loki is gender fluid, so he can be both male and female. And that’s great, because you can Cosplay him as you wish.
10. Write fan fiction or draw some fan art!
If you like writing or drawing, you could decide to write Loki fan fiction or draw him. It is a great motivation to get better in writing and drawing. You can choose slash, but you don’t need to. Simply write the stories that you feel more comfortable with. Draws can be cute as well. Just do what you want!
11. Read books about Loki and learn about Mythology!
There are many books about Loki out there, but The Gospel of Loki is extremely funny. It is a must-read if you want to become a Lokinion. You can also learn about Norse Mythology, and if you are a language geek, you can also learn Old Norse! Possibilities are actually endless!
12. Make a Loki trip!
You can decide to visit locations from the movies, or you can also take a chance and visit Iceland, and other Nordic countries. Is all for the fandom! Besides, you’ll get loads of fun!
Above all: ENJOY!
Loki’s Army is a great fandom. Not only you will join a great fandom, you can also do as Loki does: what you want! Read books, read comics, watch the movies, learn about Norse Mythology, join the Loki fashion club, meet other Lokinions and Hiddlestoners… It is a mischievous fandom, but a funny and amazing one!
Are you ready to get Loki?
