Girlboss, a new Netflix hit

Netflix has made it again with Girlboss. Based on the book with the same title [The Book Depository], this comedy takes us through Sophia’s journey towards success. She doesn’t want to work for anyone but herself. So, she will create a business on eBay selling vintage clothes that she found, but with some improvements.

Sophia is pure chaos. She is messy, selfish and incredibly energetic. She knows about fashion, but she has little knowledge about other things. I wonder if the real Sophtia is like the character we can enjoy on Netflix.

[SPOILER ALERT: from here you’ll find massive spoilers. The show is good and funny, so if you want to be surprised, refrain yourself from reading whatever comes next.]

Ghost in the Shell, lots of Shell and some Ghost

I went to see Ghost in the Shell this weekend, and I must admit I expected more from it. However, it’s a very entertaining film that follows pretty well the anime. This movie has had a lot of drama around it because of whitewashing. But, before we dive into this, let’s talk a little bit about Scarlett Johansson. Despite all the drama, she did quite a good job. Although seeing her with black hair was a little bit weird.

[SPOILER ALERT: this post contains massive spoilers and some drama about the film. However, the drama might not be what you’re expecting.]

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is Beautiful

I saw Disney’s Beauty and the Beast last Monday, and it was beautiful. I have, to be honest with you: I didn’t expect much from the movie. I’m happy to be wrong here because it’s a great Disney masterpiece. I remembered the animation movie as a pleasant ride. However, there were lots of things that didn’t tune with me. This time, Disney has fixed almost all the problems. And they created something amazing.

I loved Belle’s small family. Her Dad gave her the opportunity to grow. He didn’t limit his daughter. Instead, he opened the door for her. What’s more, he insisted on not letting Gaston frame him. He would not let his Belle be married to such a terrible man. Belle is an intelligent young woman who wants to know more about the world. Her town is small. But the problem isn’t the size of the village, but the size of the world view its inhabitants have: narrowminded. Women shouldn’t know how to read. But, what if your heart longs for something else? Shouldn’t a woman be able to choose what’s best for her?

Good Girls Revolt

Good Girls Revolt is a jewel that you can find on Amazon Prime. It might sound like the topic is dead, but it couldn’t hotter. The show has been canceled, and it seems there won’t be any second season. Is it because we’re going back in time to when women and men hadn’t the same rights? If so, we might well take our shiny armors again!

Based on real facts, this show tells us the story of a group of women and their fact for equal rights in the workplace. A group of women from Newsweek filed a complaint back in 1970 and hell broke lose. After them, many others followed.

It was a time when some women didn’t dare to look at their vulvas with a mirror. But it was also the time for the second wave of feminism. The counterculture was all over, and times were changing. And while Newsweek was covering everything, they were also discriminating their female staff. None of the women were allowed to become writers (or editors). They even hired a freelancer female writer to cover the women revolution for one of their issues. When that issue hit the stands, women working in Newsweek hold a conference and revolted.

Preacher, a Vertigo Ride

I thought Preacher was going to be boring. I was wrong. It’s a “Vertigo” ride of massive proportions. Based on a comic book by Vertigo, it tells the story of Jesse Custer, a small-town preacher who is on a mission to find God. He is a mess: he drinks until he passes out in front of the altar of his small Church; he’s best friend is an 119-year-old Irish vampire, and his ex-girlfriend wants him to kill a guy.

Could it be even weirder than this? YES!! And that’s the beauty of the show! [BIG SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SEASON 1: I can’t review it without giving away some hilarious information. This show is weird, crazy, and utterly fascinating. I’ve never laughed so much with something so gruesome!]

Thor: Ragnarok Teaser Trailer Reaction

I’m so hooked on Thor: Ragnarok teaser trailer! Thor sees how Hela destroys his hammer with style, a lot of style. We see Loki having fun with knives, and we have a flair for comedy thanks to the Hulk. But there are several points that we need to geek out loud thanks to this trailer.

Thor appears hanging from chains into a lava abyss. I bet that must be Hela’s realm. Hela’s awesome and super spooky. For starters, she appears with her traditional appearance in the comics: with lots of horns and very intimidating. She’s alluring, yes. But, she’s also very intimidating. We get to see for the first time too Valkyrie.

Valkyrie is working for the Grandmaster. And who is he? The Grandmaster is one of the Elders of the Universe. And, he’s the brother of the Collector. We know that from the comics.

Grimm, Scary Fairy Tales

I found a small treasure on Netflix: Grimm. Since I love Fairy Tales, giving this show, a chance was no brainer. Plus, it has so many seasons that it makes the perfect bidging companion for a long time.

A Portland detective called Nick Burkhardt is a descendant of the Brothers Grimm. His aunt is dying, and as his bloodline is getting short, he starts seeing things that are impossible, like wolves and beasts. So, he goes into the Grimm business without knowing much about it. In fact, in the beginning, he has problems to cope with reality.

Logan, a masterpiece and a critic to nowadays USA

I saw Logan this weekend, and I was in tears. Not only because we say goodbye to Wolverine, but because it is both a masterpiece and a huge critic to nowadays USA. I went to the cinema knowing that this was the last time I’d see one of my favorite X-men on the big screen. But I also knew I’d welcome a new character: Laura.

If Superhero movies were serious, they would be like Logan. It has action, emotion, and a deep story within. Like an onion, Logan offers us layers of different meanings and great performances. Both Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart deliver the most credible Wolverine and Professor X ever. Plus, adding Laura to the plot has been brilliant!

More on Iron Fist: episode 8 & Jackie Chan’s the Drunken Master

I didn’t expect to talk about Iron Fist so soon again. Yesterday I saw episode eight, and I was in total awe. I was the only Jackie Chan fan in the room who caught what the scene was all about. [SPOILER ALERT! Heavey spoilers of a scene of this episode!] Danny, Colleen and Claire end up in China to find the head of the Hand. At a certain point, he has to go through a door, but it’s guarded by a drunken Chinese. When I saw the beginning of the scene, I knew where this was going to end: with a fight. Not an ordinary fight, but a fight where the Drunken Master gets more power the more he drinks.

Jackie Chan’s movie, the Drunken Master, is very funny and awesomely performed. I saw it first in Chinese with English subtitles years ago, and I was hooked in Hong Kong movies. Jackie is a drunk who fights kick ass when he has alcohol in his veins.

What I’m Watching: Iron Fist. And Why I Like It (despite the odds)

I’m watching Iron Fist, and despite all the odds, I like it. I’ve been reading all the drama around the series. However, I must say that I don’t fully agree with all what’s been mentioned. Before you decide to kill me, consider the following: representation goes beyond stereotypes. It means that we all have patterns in our head and expectations with each other. Also, take into account that I haven’t finished the entire series and I might change my mind. However, this is what I got for you for the time being. When reading this also remember my personal experience, since it will help you understand why I feel so close to Danny. I lived during eight years in Tokyo, I learned a lot there, came back in Europe, and people saw me as a lunatic. Fortunately I didn’t end into a psychiatric ward, nor had to punch anyone with my fist.

[MILD SPOILERS AHEAD. If you don’t mind the mild spoilers, please be my guest and keep reading this review.]
