It’s THORsday again! This means that we’re going to read comics! This week we’re going to explore all about Spider-Man: Miles Morales. He happens to have extra powers compared with Spidey. He has a problem: he doesn’t know how to balance his Superhero life with his normal life. Fortunately, his best friend and his dad are there to help. But, things look pretty grim at the moment.
For starters, he has a fan online: a young YouTuber. She has captured a video from a battle. Miles got his mask broken, and she could see that he’s brown. She instantly became a fan. Also because of representation grounds. However, Miles isn’t that happy about it.
This week we’re going to explore a sweet comic by Ru Xu called NewsPrints. I found it diving into the shelves of the local comic book store. It tells the story of Blue. She’s an orphan who works as a newsboy. To do that she has to disguise herself as a guy. Since the comic book happens during the war time, it’s not surprising to see men and women doing different roles. Blue is a girl, so she should be selling cookies. However, she loves living and working at the Bugle, the only newspaper that does deliver the truth in town.
So, Blue’s job is crucial: she delivers a right paper that explains the truth to their readers. But, everything seems fine as long as she is a boy. But, what would happen if she were to tell the others that she’s a girl?
Yay! It’s THORsday again! It’s time to take a look at Marvel’s Runaways (Secret Wars x Battleworld). In this alternate reality, Von Doom has created a world where only the best are in the elite. And so, he has created a school where students train. Every year, there is a final exam they all must take in groups. But there’s a group of students who are in detention and who are going to get in trouble if they don’t sign up for the final exam.
Jubilee, Sanna, Pixie, Amadeus Cho, Delphyne, Skaar, Molly, Tandy, and Dagger are in detention for creating trouble. Bucky sent them there. He’s in charge of security. The school’s headmaster is Valeria (Von Doom’s daughter). As you can imagine, they end up cheating and signing up. But Doom is smart and knows they have cheated!
Today we’re going to explore Black Widow, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Most Wanted [The Book Depository]. If you love spy stories with Americans and a sexy Russian, you’re going to love this new permutation of Natasha. The use of colors is very smart. I’ve seen clever uses of color, but this one really does the job. The story is mesmerizing, intriguing and with lots of action. In short, this is a great read if you’re up for trouble.
Natasha is deadly. She’s the best in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ranks. However, she’s the most wanted by everyone! We start reading following Natasha’s steps running away from the S.H.I.E.L.D. So, what’s going on?
[SPOILERS: yes, there are spoilers in this post. I love the Black Widow, and so far I find this trade one of the best out there!]
This THORsday we’re going to take a look at The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel Power [The Book Depository]. She is one of the strongest characters within the Marvel Comic Book Universe. She’s smart, sassy, and very funny. One of the strong points isn’t her strength but her abilities. One of them is computer science. It’s great to find a Superhero that doesn’t conform to stereotypes. Not only her body shape is different to many female Superheroes, her attitude and brains too. So, it’s great to find a female Superhero that represents girls in an unbeatable way.
In this trade we’ll find the origin story of Squirrel Girl. We’ll also meet her friends and her mother. We also get to know her tastes and personality. Furthermore, we can also meet other Superheroes too, even if it’s just through cameos.
Weirdworld [The Book Depository] is certainly a weird comic book. Marvel Comics has made a huge bet with it. Although it might seen chaotic at first, it’s a fascinating reading. We follow the adventures of Becca, a teen girl from the US who is travelling to Mexico to bring the ashes of her deceased mother to a resting place. Her mother commited suicide and she’s comming to grips with it. Possibly, she did so due to a depression.
Becca never makes it to Mexico. Instead, the plane crashes on the Weirdworld. It’s a crazy land of magic and mayhem. There she meets Goleta, the Wizard Slayer. Together, they embark on a quest. Becca just wants to return home, Earth. She has an Infinity Stone that Morgan Le Fay (the evil Queen of Weirdworld) wants.
Mockingbird is a masterpiece and a great read. If you remember, there’s been a lot of noise online due to one of the covers of the issues. Feminist agenda can spark a lot of fire within the geek community. And so, it happened with Mockingbird. Barbara “Borri” Morse works for S.H.I.E.L.D., and she has to get checks very often. She dreamed of being a Superhero since she was a kid, but she didn’t do it by chance. She was a patient that received an experimental treatment that is highly volatile. It was a Super-Soldier serum. And that makes her a badass.
This THORsday comes with Patsy Walker, aka Hellcat [The Book Depository]. If you haven’t read this trade already, do it, because it’s hilarious. The artwork is fresh, funny and inspiring. And the script is simply a masterpiece of laughs. Hellcat is jobless and fighting crime. In the first pages we discover that the She-Hulk has to fire her because of a lack of work. Despite this, she keeps on the positive side of the street and keeps fighting crime. Even if she has to work in retail!
One of the things that I like the most are the explanations with kitty-shaped panels. These are funny, fresh and make the resumes on what’s going on amazingly.
Welcome to another comics THORsday! Today we’re going to explore Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life as a Weapon (Marvel NOW!) [The Book Depository]. This is a great trade to discover Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, the coolest Hawkeye pair existing in the comics. I personally don’t like Clint, at least in the movies. However, I do enjoy this encarnation and Kate. Both are badass and are a great team who kickass at ease. In this first volume we discover how down-to-earth Clint is, and his relationship with his collegue Kate.
There are many strong points in this series: we get to enjoy two different Hawkeyes together; we get to enjoy amazing art in all the pages, and we get thrilled with the stories in the volume. And in all, this is a masterpiece.
[SPOILERS: there are mild spoilers ahead. If you haven’t read the comic book yet, refrain from reading beyond here. However, if you are okay with spoilers, please keep going!]
Welcome to an excellent comics THORsday! Today we’re going to explore New Romancer Vol. 1 [The Book Depository], a trade from Vertigo. And it’s not what you might expect. The main character of the story is a computer girl called Lexy who codes crazy stuff. She works on the Romance Algorithm for New Romancer, a code that matches and seduces likely lovers. However, to make it work, she uses the A.I. she stole from her previous job at the Incubator. The Incubator is a trying to put personalities into dead bodies. A thing our protagonist doesn’t know.
Solar flairs make an accident just when Lexy is working on the personality of Lord Byron and Casanova’s. As this happens, back in the lab of the Incubator, all the dead bodies awaken along with those Romancers personalities. And this is when the fun begins!
Just as she walks back to the Incubator to make sure she didn’t smash things up too much, she encounters a guy who speaks in poems. Since she loves poetry, she decides to help him. However, he is rather odd.
