Marvel Comics Editor Heather Antos dared to share a selfie with her coworkers online. And then trolls attacked her because of that. Fake Geek Girl is one of the many accusations that she’s faced since she dared to share her Milkshake. But what’s all this hate towards geek women? Why all the harassment online? Heather Antos is one of the many women working in comics. But you don’t need to work in comics to face such slash online or offline. Although comics, as gaming, have been thought to be male areas during many years, reality tells otherwise. There are women working in all fields, and enjoying geekdom like never before. Let’s face it: women are here to stay. Not only they have money to spend in these geek niches, but they also work in them! And most importantly: they are geek and want to show it up everywhere.
So, what’s really going on?
Comic by Meg Danger
Today we’re reading Angela: Queen of Hel – Journey to the Funderworld [The Book Depository]. Angela is the sister of Thor and Loki. She is an Angel, beings that believe in the motto: “Nothing for nothing, everything has its price.” Angela is tough, rough, and a great warrior. But she felt in love with Sera. In her quest of freeing Sera from the realm of Hela, she becomes a Corival, a contender to the throne.
So, Angela must pass individual trials, and if she does, she’ll be the new Queen of Hel. And she’ll have Sera by her side.
This week we’re reading All-New Wolverine Vol. 1: The Four Sisters [The Book Depository]. X-23, Laura, the cloned daughter of Wolverine is on a mission in Paris along with Angel. There she discovers that the villain is one of her clones! How traumatic can it be to find out that the one making all the fuss is someone just like you?
Wolverine mentored Laura, so she stopped being a weapon and an assassin. Now, she’s the new Wolverine. She took her father’s job, and she’s trying hard to be a Superhero. However, things are getting strange. She discovers that there are some clones of her who want revenge. A secret part of the Government created them, and they took away all their feelings. They don’t care if they’re shot, or if they die.
This THORsday we’re exploring the mess in Extraordinary X-Men Vol. 1: X-Haven [The Book Depository]. In the world, there are the X-men, the Inhumans, and humans. And all of them are scared and fighting against the X-men. A mist is either killing them or sterilizing them. The future looks grim, and so, Storm has no choice. The X-men are at war for survival.
But to be successful Storm and the others have to recruit some X-men again. That includes Jean (who comes from the past), and a surprise, Wolverine (who comes from the future). But things aren’t that easy.
This week we’re reading Spider-Verse: Warzones! [The Book Depository] I have to admit that it’s a little bit weird: you have lots of Spiders, and it’s quite messy. But, it’s also fun. We are in an alternate universe where Spider-Man, Spider-Gwen, Venom and other Spiders end up. Their memories are confusing. How can Spider-Gwen be in a place where she has died? And, how can there be a Spider-Ham that loves eating pork?
If your mind is exploding, Gwen’s doing that too. She is suspicious of her new Spider-friends, but all are nice so far. However, the villains seem to be a pain.
Today is Star Wars 40th Anniversary! One day like this, just forty years ago, Star Wars made it to the big screen. Today is also the Geek Pride Day. So, today is perfect! And it’s also comics THORsday! So, we’re going to celebrate everything with Skywalker Strikes“>Skywalker Strikes [The Book Depository]. If you love Star Wars, you’ll probably enjoy reading further adventures in the comics. Plus, you get to enjoy your favorite heroes even more.
In Skywalker Strikes we are in a period where the rebellion is hopeful. The evil Galactic Empire’s greatest weapon, the Death Star, has been destroyed by Luke. With the Imperial Forces in disarray, the Rebels look to press their advantage by unleashing a daring offensive throughout the far reaches of space, hoping to defeat the Empire once and for all and at last restore freedom to the galaxy.
It’s THORsday again! This means that we’re going to read comics! This week we’re going to explore all about Spider-Man: Miles Morales. He happens to have extra powers compared with Spidey. He has a problem: he doesn’t know how to balance his Superhero life with his normal life. Fortunately, his best friend and his dad are there to help. But, things look pretty grim at the moment.
For starters, he has a fan online: a young YouTuber. She has captured a video from a battle. Miles got his mask broken, and she could see that he’s brown. She instantly became a fan. Also because of representation grounds. However, Miles isn’t that happy about it.
This week we’re going to explore a sweet comic by Ru Xu called NewsPrints. I found it diving into the shelves of the local comic book store. It tells the story of Blue. She’s an orphan who works as a newsboy. To do that she has to disguise herself as a guy. Since the comic book happens during the war time, it’s not surprising to see men and women doing different roles. Blue is a girl, so she should be selling cookies. However, she loves living and working at the Bugle, the only newspaper that does deliver the truth in town.
So, Blue’s job is crucial: she delivers a right paper that explains the truth to their readers. But, everything seems fine as long as she is a boy. But, what would happen if she were to tell the others that she’s a girl?
Yay! It’s THORsday again! It’s time to take a look at Marvel’s Runaways (Secret Wars x Battleworld). In this alternate reality, Von Doom has created a world where only the best are in the elite. And so, he has created a school where students train. Every year, there is a final exam they all must take in groups. But there’s a group of students who are in detention and who are going to get in trouble if they don’t sign up for the final exam.
Jubilee, Sanna, Pixie, Amadeus Cho, Delphyne, Skaar, Molly, Tandy, and Dagger are in detention for creating trouble. Bucky sent them there. He’s in charge of security. The school’s headmaster is Valeria (Von Doom’s daughter). As you can imagine, they end up cheating and signing up. But Doom is smart and knows they have cheated!
Today we’re going to explore Black Widow, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Most Wanted [The Book Depository]. If you love spy stories with Americans and a sexy Russian, you’re going to love this new permutation of Natasha. The use of colors is very smart. I’ve seen clever uses of color, but this one really does the job. The story is mesmerizing, intriguing and with lots of action. In short, this is a great read if you’re up for trouble.
Natasha is deadly. She’s the best in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ranks. However, she’s the most wanted by everyone! We start reading following Natasha’s steps running away from the S.H.I.E.L.D. So, what’s going on?
[SPOILERS: yes, there are spoilers in this post. I love the Black Widow, and so far I find this trade one of the best out there!]
