Ask Me About My Feminist Agenda

So, what’s my feminist agenda, you may ask? It’s quite simple: there’s no agenda. It might come as a shock for some, but I don’t have anything in mind but geeking out loud. I have projects, yes, but agendas? The only agenda I have is my Italian one, and I write things like: I need to blog today.

I suppose that this had to happen at some point in my blogging life. If you’re all about uplifting women and promoting badass strong characters, I assume that some people take it the wrong way. But before we all freak-out, let’s take a look at what feminist is.

A feminist is a person who supports feminism. And what is feminism? Is it a disease? The word has had tons of bad marketing, so when you say it out loud some bells inside your head ring out loud. Nope, it’s not a disease, and it’s not Ragnarok. So, what is it?

Girlboss, a new Netflix hit

Netflix has made it again with Girlboss. Based on the book with the same title [The Book Depository], this comedy takes us through Sophia’s journey towards success. She doesn’t want to work for anyone but herself. So, she will create a business on eBay selling vintage clothes that she found, but with some improvements.

Sophia is pure chaos. She is messy, selfish and incredibly energetic. She knows about fashion, but she has little knowledge about other things. I wonder if the real Sophtia is like the character we can enjoy on Netflix.

[SPOILER ALERT: from here you’ll find massive spoilers. The show is good and funny, so if you want to be surprised, refrain yourself from reading whatever comes next.]

Thor: Ragnarok. What’s up with Mjolnir!?

I cannot stop thinking about Thor: Ragnarok. To be more precise: I cannot stop thinking about Mjolnir. We’ve all seen how Hela has smashed Thor’s favorite toy. But, is it a toy? It might seem ridiculous to worry about the fate of a Hammer; however, there’s much more to Mjolnir that meets the eye.

For starters, Mjolnir is the Hammer of God. Well, the Hammer of Thor. As Odin stated in the first movie, “Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” Thus, it very much looks like the Hammer is the source of Thor’s power. If so, what will happen to Thor during Ragnarok? Is he mortal again?

As you remember, Odin sent Thor to Earth without his powers so that he would learn a lesson. He was a bully and a spoiled individual. Very much like any child, he would ask for what he wanted without understanding or care for the consequences. Soon, Thor discovered that he wasn’t a kid anymore, and that he needed something more than a shiny face to have the things that he wanted.

Thor: Ragnarok Teaser Trailer Reaction

I’m so hooked on Thor: Ragnarok teaser trailer! Thor sees how Hela destroys his hammer with style, a lot of style. We see Loki having fun with knives, and we have a flair for comedy thanks to the Hulk. But there are several points that we need to geek out loud thanks to this trailer.

Thor appears hanging from chains into a lava abyss. I bet that must be Hela’s realm. Hela’s awesome and super spooky. For starters, she appears with her traditional appearance in the comics: with lots of horns and very intimidating. She’s alluring, yes. But, she’s also very intimidating. We get to see for the first time too Valkyrie.

Valkyrie is working for the Grandmaster. And who is he? The Grandmaster is one of the Elders of the Universe. And, he’s the brother of the Collector. We know that from the comics.

Do What You Can’t. Happy International Women’s Day!

Do what you can’t! I know it isn’t the piece you were waiting for the International Women’s Day. However, this is it. Do you know how many times I’ve listened to “you can’t” in my life? A zillion times!

Go to Japan?

You can’t.

Write a book about Loki?

You can’t.

Paragliding?

You can’t.

How to cover your books and comic books like a pro!

Today I want to share with you how to cover your books and comic books like a pro. I’ve been putting clear covers on my trades and books to keeping them safe since times immemorial. Even my mother has used me as the official librarian of the family: when I go back home I know I’ll be putting covers on books!

Why do I cover my books and comic books? I want to make sure that the paper covers are protected. Most paperbacks and trades can be damaged very quickly. Using clear covers allows me to keep them safe and to enjoy the covers in all their glory.

World Anthropology Day: the Art of Geek Observation

Today is the World Anthropology Day, according to the American Anthropological Association (aka AAA). What better way to celebrate it than exploring the art of geek observation? Anthropologists observe what people do, why they do it, how they do it, and even when they do it. To explore a culture is to explore humanity. But can only anthropologists engage in the art of observation? Can we, as observed beings, also become the ones who observe?

Usually, the ones observing what’s going on are anthropologists. They watch, interact and take part into the object of study. But can we, as geeks, do the same? We have the idea that Anthropologists are either “Indiana Jones” or like dull academic creatures. However, we, geeks, can be anthropologists too.

J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World Loot Crate Unboxing

So, it happened with J.K.Rowling’s Wizarding World Loot Crate unboxing! I made a video! It took me three days of wait until I could open my box and prepare myself to talk in front of a camera. This box came quite late since Loot Crate came up with some problems getting all the items. As I understood, we had to choose our House, and they would send us times from our House. However, items came mixed. To my delight, I got a tee from Slytherin. It seems that they’ll be sending a House-themed box next time. I hope they do since I was expecting that from this box.

When I was sorted in Pottermore, I got Ravenclaw. Then I tried again, and I got into Slytherin. So, I suppose I must be a mix of them: Raverin. Although I end up rooting for Slytherin, I have to confess that I do have Ravenclaw traits. Besides, I love Luna as well!

Embracing my Dark Side with Villain Archetypes

Today I want to explore the art of embracing my Dark Side with villain archetypes. We have a tendency to love villains more than heroes. Although we think of ourselves wonderful people, some of us tend to root for the villains. Meanwhile, we talk all about positivity and try to be our best. However, we do have a dark side. How we manage it make us villains or heroes for the people around us.

In ancient times, people used mythology to explore their bright and dark sides. We can believe we’ve forgotten this stage in evolution, but we aren’t that different from our ancestors. The only difference is what archetypes we use. Instead of Hercules, we choose Superman. Our myths are found in pop culture, not in ancient books anymore.

So, when we are having a rough time, and we start thinking about a thousand ways to Hulk-smash someone, instead of thinking about unicorns, we would probably be thinking about Darth Vader and Loki. Let me explain.

WE ARE GROOT: Why diversity and connection makes us better

“We are Groot” is a strong statement. The first movie of Guardians of the Galaxy presents us a plant as a Superhero: Groot. He spends most of the film stating “I am Groot.” However, by the end of it, he finally says “we are Groot.” It might look like a weak sentence but it hides a powerful feeling: that connection makes us better, regardless of who we are.

Think about the movie: an Earthling, a green humanoid assassin, an alien with few brains, a lab rat that talks, and a tree safe the Galaxy. And they do so as a team: through their connection to each other. These heroes couldn’t be more different from each other, and more diverse. They begin their quest openly hating each other, but they soon learn that those differences are but illusions.
