The Tyrant Falls in Love [The Book Depository] [Waterstones] [CDJapan] is a funny yaoi manga with lots of comedic moments. The Tyrant is a biology student who has a very cranky personality. He hates gays, yells a lot, and has hideous tantrums since he discovered that gay marriage is legal in the United States. His name is Tatsumi, and he doesn’t know it yet, but his laboratory kohai Morinaga loves him. Morinaga is very patient doing whatever the tyrant Tatsumi wants. He hopes that one day he’ll notice him and fall in love. But, his dreams about his beloved are just that, dreams. Well, until a friend of his gives him a potion that will change the game forever.

Tatsumi has more tantrums than usual. His little brother lives in the US, the country that makes it possible for the little guy to marry whoever he wants. Tatsumi cannot stand homos. He’s just a huge hater. Morinaga, tries to keep him calm, but at night he ends up in a gay bar where a friend gets him some miracle wine bottle. It’s an aphrodisiac that will keep whoever drinks it super hot for many hours.

Morinaga first thinks about getting rid of the bottle and throw it away in the trash. However, he ends up keeping it and hiding it at the far end of one of the shelves of his wardrobe. Little he knows that his sempai Tatsumi will end up drinking it when he gets drunk visiting him home to complain and throw his usual tantrums.

Tatsumi drinks all the alcohol, and Morinaga ends up going out to buy some more drinks. Meanwhile, Tatsumi is unable to wait for him and starts looking everywhere for more alcohol. And he finds the aphrodisiac at the far end of a shelf. Thinking it’s just good alcohol, he takes it and drinks all of it. By the time Morinaga arrives, Tatsumi is more drunk than ever. At the beginning there seems to be no other change in Tatsumi. Nothing happens until in the middle of the night he wakes up because he’s too turned on he needs to go to the loo. The mission is to jerk off. There’s only a problem: his body isn’t answering well. His limbs feel too weak, and he’s too hot.

Morinaga can’t believe what’s happening, and finally understands that what’s going on with his sempai is the miracle of the beberage. Unable to find any better solution, he offers to Tatsumi to help him release. Obviously, the tyrant doesn’t want to because it’s too gay and he hates gays. The conversation that goes back and forth is priceless, but Morinaga, unable to help himself, starts touching Tatsumi.

What happens next is a trope in yaoi: Morinaga forces himself into Tatsumi. Tatsumi doesn’t want it, but there’s something astray: he’s blushing, and not because of rage. And yes, Morinaga goes all the way doing everything. Although he wishes for the night not to end, morning arrives and with it the Tyrant awakes again. Tatsumi takes the bottle of the aphrodisiac, now empty, breaks it and tries to cut Morinaga with it. But he can’t. Instead, he tells Morinaga that he doesn’t want to see his face ever again!

Tatsumi is “ill.” So he takes a break of one week and stays home with his family. In the meanwhile, Morinaga continues Tatsumi’s experiments in the lab. And then, he decides to quit University, so that the Tyrant won’t see him anymore. Unable to face Tatsumi, he hides.

First Tatsumi is left working in his lab, but soon some colleagues approach him asking about the whereabouts of Morinaga. From that moment on, he starts to worry to the point that he fears Morinaga might have commited suicide! Could he just disappear for good? Worried sick, he goes as far as contacting Morinaga’s family in search for answers. But he has none. So, he ends up visiting Morinaga’s appartment everyday until he finds him.

What comes next is a lovers quarrel. Why did you get away without telling me anything? Is this a type of blackmailing? Without noticing, Tatsumi is telling Morinaga that he has feelings for him. Does Tatsumi acknowlege them? Not in a million years! Instead, he insists Morinaga is blackmailing him. If he leaves University, what will the Tyrant do?

Morinaga ends up embracing Tatsumi, and after a while they end up kissing. And after kissing, they end up making up again. But, has anything changed? Not really. While Tatsumi argues that what’s going on is a type of blackmailing, the truth is that he’s falling for Morinaga. But, he’ll never acknowlege it. Instead, he keeps being a Tyrant in the laboratory and denying whatever relationship he started with his kohai. Gay is a word he hates. And what he does isn’t gay at all.

On the other hand, Morinaga is too happy to realize that he’s going to suffer forever. While he might have the Tyrant in the sheets, he’s not going to have him openly in the streets any time soon. He’s as bickery and cruel in the lab as ever. Plus, trying to get next to him is as difficult as it has always been.

Expect endless quarrels, funny script and mindblowing reasons not to acknowlege that the Tyrant is in love with Morinaga. He’s a hater, perhaps he knows deep down that he is as gay as Morinaga is. It’s true that the manga is plenty of tropes, however it’s very funny. The smut parts are but a few, but the juicier parts of this piece aren’t those: it’s the dialogues between Tatsumi and Morinaga that make it shine. Tatsumi will find the most incredible reasons not to say that he likes Morinaga. Also, he becomes a hellhound every time someone mentions gay couples.

Tatsumi’s younger borther is gay and lives in the US with his partner. Perhaps he’s just jealous? I hope that we’ll discover all about it in the second volume. For the time being, Tatsumi and Morinaga are lovers, even if Tatsumi doesn’t want to name the relationship they have.

Don’t miss The Tyrant Falls in Love [The Book Depository] [Waterstones] [CDJapan]. It’s too funny!
