The Shadowhunters series has a graphic novel! Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments [The Book Depository] is perfect thanks to the art of Cassandra Jean. I was a little bit nervous with another adaptation of the Shadowhunters; however, the comic book is brilliant.
The artwork has a manga style, and that makes it fresh and alluring. And, the story follows a natural flow. I dislike the film and show adaptations. I know many people love the show, but I can’t swallow it. It seems that this book series adaptations are best when you find them in paper!
I’m pretty sure that you know the story already, but just to refresh it a bit let’s say that Clary is in trouble. She’s had a pretty mundane life, but now everything is shaking up. She can see people and things other people can’t, and it seems that there’s more to her than meets the eye.
In this first volume, we get to know all the main characters and why Clary is so unique. We get to see monsters, romance, and drama. Clary’s mother is missing. There’s a villain on the loose searching for a magic cup, and she’s starting to feel things for Jace, the cool Shadowhunter.
Valentine wants the Cup, Clary wants her mother, Jace seems to want Clary, Simon is in between Isabelle and Clary, and Bane wants Alec. And with all the romance flair going on, there’re monsters, mysteries, and many things to discover about the Shadowhunters.
The artwork is fresh and bubbly. It makes things float. So, you feel like you’re reading a stream. I went far too fast reading this graphic novel. So, I did it twice just to notice all the details of the drawings.
If you haven’t read the books yet, and just met the Shadowhunters through film and Netflix, let me tell you that you’re missing a lot. The books are great, and this graphic novel too. If you’re scared that it will be as bad as the movie, breath twice and give the graphic novel a try. I’d recommend the books too, but this will do nicely also.
I like how Cassandra Jean has envisioned the characters from the book. I find them credible and funky. Also, the manga flair of the illustrations makes the whole story even better. I might be biased because I’m used to reading manga, but I think it fits the story more than just any other style.
Just give this a try [The Book Depository]! It’s one of the best ways to enter the Shadowhunter world.
