Welcome to Loki Year 2016! I’ve been very busy during these last weeks, since I’m moving to a new house soon. And so, I missed some meetings with Loki year 2016. So, today we’re going to do all the missing chapters: the necklace of the Brinsings and Skirnir’s journey from Gods of Asgard : A Graphic Novel Interpretation of the Norse Myths, in the World of Hiddles from Geek Anthropology of Loki’s Army, and Book 3 lessons 1 to 5 from the Gospel of Loki.
Let’s start with the Necklace of the Brisings. As you know, Freyja is the Goddess of beauty, but also war. So, how come the most beautiful Goddess of Asgard also became a terrifying one? We could blame Loki, but in fact, we also have to blame her insatiable wish for beauty. There were four famous Dwarves in Svartalfheim. They were famous because of the weapons and jewels they created. But there was something in particular that was famous because it was the most beautiful thing in all the realms: a necklace. Freyja, crazy to be the most beautiful creature to walk all realms, set foot in Svartalfheim and asked them the necklace. But they weren’t so eager to give it to her. Unless…
Unless she would sleep with all the disgusting Dwarves! So much was her desire to possess the necklace that she did it! And after some days of sleeping with them, they gave her the necklace, and she came back to Asgard.
But, someone had seen her: Loki. And what did Loki decide to do? Tell everything to Odin. To prove that he was telling the truth, Odin ordered him to bring him the necklace. Freyja would sleep with the necklace and never take it off. So, Loki would transform into a fly to pick it up. He got it and brought it to Odin.
Odin was furious: Freyja did a very shameful thing! And so, he told her that if she still wanted to be the Goddess of beauty, she also needed to be the terrifying goddess of war. And so, because she wanted that necklace so madly, she accepted. And that’s why she is both beautiful and terrifying!
Skirnir’s Journey, however, wasn’t one of desire but one of love. He found Frey depressed, and when he told him, he decided to help him. Frey snuck into Odin’s Hall and sat on Lidskjalf. From there he could see everything, including the Frost Giants. Alas, he saw the most beautiful creature ever: a Frost beauty. He felt in love instantly, and from that moment on he couldn’t stop thinking about her! And so, he told Skirnir to bring her at all costs! He had to do whatever to bring her to him!
And so, Skirnir went to see the magnificent frozen maiden. She refused all the presents. Skirnir, not knowing what to do, started to threaten her. But it wasn’t until he threatens her with magic and making her ugly that she would accept Frey as her husband. But, she told Skirnir to tell Frey to wait during five weeks. And so, Frey would get his beauty threatening her! What a way to melt a frozen heart!
Now, we’re going to take a look at the world of Hiddles. Have you ever thought about how much of Tom Hiddleston can be found in Loki? We’re going to take a look at body language. Believe it or not, body language accounts for a 93% of communication. This means that only a 7% of our communication is words. So, can gestures convey or make someone thing about a character as the real deal?
Non-verbal communication not only accounts for gestures. Here you have to include the voice tone and pitch, and micro-expressions on our faces. Information leaks out in non-verbal communication, and so does our personality. This means that an actor who is portraying a character cannot be a 100% faithful to him. Thus, some of the actor’s personality will leak into the portrayed character.
If we think about Tom Hiddleston, we realize that he is a very sweet man. His movements are sweet; his voice is tempered, and he emanates kindness and sweetness all over. However, Loki has a different personal narrative: tricky, powerful and challenging. However, both Tom and Loki share non-verbal language: the eyebrow of Doom and the Hiddlesleg spread, to name some examples.
Tom’s eyebrow is famous for being so sexy that fans fall for it instantly. The mischievous eyebrow moves in the same way on Tom and Loki. The narrative is the same in both. The same happens with Tom’s leg spread. Certain body movements convey empowerment and security. This is what happens with the leg spread. Something that Loki and Tom share as well. Tom does it for comfort, Loki to show power. But at the end of the day fans feel that Tomki, the imaginary combination of Tom and Loki, is well and alive.
Although fans do know that Tom and Loki are entirely different, they also fantasize about them being the same person. Tom is just Loki walking Earth with the will of conquering all of it. Movements, voice, and gestures shared in both reaffirm their narrative for the delight of fans!
We jump to the Gospel of Loki to discover the current status of the relationship between Loki and Odin. Not surprisingly, it’s freezing at speed light. Loki states:
I don’t pretend to know much about love, but that’s how great loves come to an end, not in the flames of passion, but in the silence of regret. And that’s how my brother Odin and I reached the end of our fellowship; not in the heat of battle (though that would come round soon enough), but in lies, and polite smiles, and protestations of loyalty.
Loki, a being from chaos, cannot understand why Odin wants order so madly. Since order makes things stagnant. Also, he also cannot grasp why Odin needs perfect knowledge!
Perfect knowledge was what he’d craved, but with perfect knowledge, illusions die, including such perennials as friendship, love, and loyalty. (…) How can you hope to have any friends when you spy on everything they do? How can you enjoy the present when you can see the future? Most of all, how can you love when you know Death lies in waiting?
And this is what happens between Loki and Odin: a clash of titans. On one hand, Odin needs to know everything. Paranoic, he is unable to have friends. Who would be friends with a peeping Tom? Here, I understand Loki completely. How can you pledge loyalty to someone who is going all Big Brother on you and who questions every single move you make because of a prophecy?
And so, Loki knows about a particular head that whispers in Odin’s ears what’s yet to come. Now the question is: will it come true because it had to come true, or because the head is plotting for it to happen and Odin’s paranoia is helping it?
