Another book reading list is here! This time, I want to introduce some books on geeks and nerds. I like to read about geeks and nerds, even if I know almost all the things the book has to offer. But, there are many times that books that look that contain not much information, happen to have loads of it that you didn’t know. Here is a short list of books that I’ve read and adored hat talk about geeks and nerds, geekdom and nerddom, about fandom and the people who make it awesome. I hope you decide to read some of them too!
American Nerd : The Story of My People is a jewel. I bought this book by chance, and I loved it! In fact this is a book that I like to re-read from time to time [even if I don’t agree what it says about autism]. It’s not a fiction book. This is a book that tells the story of geeks and nerds, explain who they are and why we have the stereotypes we have on ourselves! This is a must read if you want to discover geeks and nerds (and also jokes) in the US. If you’re not from the US this is also a great book to discover American pop culture. So, give this a try! It’s really worth it!
The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy : A Lexicon of Life Hacks for the Modern Lady Geek is another treasure to have at home or to give as a present. I knew the contents already, but not everything (of course). This is a great book to have at home and show up to unfortunate friends who ask you about fandoms, or the perfect present to give to your friends so that they will fall into fandom soon. This simple guide comes in handy in many situations. Plus, it’s cute!
Geek Girls Unite : How Fangirls, Bookworms, Indie Chicks, and Other Misfits are Taking Over the World it’s another guide for geek girls, this time an uplifting one. It’s designed to make you feel into the trope and discover, if you didn’t know them already, notorious fangirls. We know tons about geek guys, but, what about geek girls? There are also funny quizzes. This book also is perfect to give as a gift. (If you’re thinking to brainwash someone into geekdom, this might be it!)
Nerds : How Dorks, Dweebs, Techies, and Trekkies Can Save America … and Why They Might be Our Last Hope is written by a psychologist who targets the stereotypes on geeks and nerds, and how damaging it can be. This is a book to discover why we might not like ourselves so much as geeks due to that. But this is also a book for conquering the world. Are you up for it?
Geektionary : From Anime to Zettabyte, an A to Z Guide to All Things Geek is the dictionary I give as present to people who are about to become geeks but are unsure about it. This dictionary comes in handy when you don’t want to explain yourself. To have it at home has proven to be magical, just because I don’t want to send people to google stuff on their phones. Plus, it looks good when you give a copy to them as well with a “speak nerdy to me” as closure. Priceless.
Geek in Japan : Discovering the Land of Manga, Anime, ZEN, and the Tea Ceremony is pretty entertaining. Hector García is a Spanish blogger that I met in Tokyo eons ago. He is a famous blogger in Spain who has written two books and who has a very funny and artistic blog. He started talking about funny stuff he found in Tokyo, but now he is more into photography. If you like Japanese culture, this is your book. It’s fresh, has great pictures and it also makes a great present! [I check his Instagram every day. I like the pics he takes. You could also give it a go.]
